Barbara Bui Resort ’15

Mixing cultures has always been a part of Barbara Bui’s design DNA. As a woman who grew up in Paris with a French mother and Vietnamese father, she makes a point of blending Western tropes with ancient Asian culture in every one of her collections. For Resort 2015, that translates into an aesthetic that features equal parts hip-hop and Chinese Dong tribe, a mash-up of oversized hoodies, wrapped silhouettes, and basketball basics in unique fabrics and abstract animal prints. Many of the pieces are convertible — a trench coat unzips at the waist to become a cropped jacket, sleeves zip off from a blue dress to create a simple shift. The sharpness of a tailored jacket is off-set by the light fluidity of asymmetrical poly silk dress or Indonesian wrap pants. Technical fabrics — neoprene, leather-effect satin — are employed throughout, as is a stripe rib edging that adds an additional sporty touch. And the footwear, oxfords and sandals with striped creeper soles, actually makes the pointy-toed trend look appealing.
