On the Straight and Narrow

For pre-fall, A.L.C. balances just the right amount of prim with a little bit of proper and makes it all appear devastatingly cool.

In her pre-fall line for A.L.C., designer Andrea Lieberman experimented with the notion of “the uniform” and created a tidy collection that seems to draw from both private school vestment and traditional Amish dress. Modest pleat skirts sweep at the knee and silk blouses boast intricately embroidered bibs. The crisp white button-front shirt is a strong supporting player, layered beneath sleeveless shells or turned into a shirtdress. A.L.C.’s perennial layered tank even gets an update in black and white with mock suspender straps. While the majority of the collection is rendered in a solid two-tone palette, shots of citrus yellow (this season’s favorite color jolt) and a dainty flower print shake things up just enough to keep the clothes from being overly austere.
