Universal and Warner Brothers Take Lead At Box Office

Half the year is gone and box office numbers resemble those of years past.

Monday, August 15, marked $7.08 billion in box office sales up from last years $7.07 billion, according to Rentrack and studio accounting. This summer sales started 14% behind last year and with less than expected numbers from high profile blockbusters like Disney’s The Lone Ranger, Warner Bros.’ Pacific Rim and Sony’s White House Down and After Earth the box office is still set to break 2011’s record summer of 4.4 billion.

Here’s the rundown of the top studios by market share.

No. 1 Universal           – $1.15 Billion (Despicable Me 2, Fast & Furious 6, Identity Thief, The Purge)

No. 2 Warner Bros.    – $1.14 Billion (Man of Steel, The Great Gatsby, The Conjuring, The Hangover III)

No. 3 Disney                – $1.07 Billion  (Iron Man 3, Monsters University, Oz the Great and Powerful)

No. 4 Fox                      – $846 Million (Dreamworks Animation’s The Croods, The Heat, The Wolverine)
